What to Expect
Our programs are built for learning, practice, and growth. This page explains what that means, so you can decide whether a program is right for you at this time.
What this is
VMSC programs are educational and experiential. They are not therapy or counseling, and facilitators do not act as your therapist. Participating does not create a clinical relationship. If you are working with a therapist or other mental health provider, please check with them that this program is appropriate for you at this time.
Your participation is your choice
You decide how much to share and how far to go in any experience. You can pass or step out at any time. Some of the work is personal and can bring up strong feelings. If you need support beyond what a program can offer, please contact a mental health professional. In the U.S., you can call or text 988.
Programs that go deeper
Family Reconstruction and the Satir Intensive can touch family history and strong emotion. If you have experienced significant trauma, please talk with a therapist or other mental health provider before registering. Participating in these processes does not prepare you to facilitate them. Facilitating them with others requires specialized training and supervision beyond a single program.
Groups
Our ongoing groups are for learning and for professional or personal development. They are not therapy groups. In the Consultation Group, facilitators offer perspective, not supervision of record. You remain responsible for your own cases and for any required clinical supervision.
Confidentiality
We ask every participant to keep what others share confidential. VMSC cannot guarantee that they will, so share only what you are comfortable sharing.
Using what you learn
Many participants apply this work with clients, teams, and families right away, and we're glad. You are responsible for how you use it. VMSC and its facilitators do not supervise your work and are not responsible for how you or others apply what is taught. Use it within your license, training, and professional ethics, and seek consultation or supervision when you need it.
What a certificate means
A certificate or NBCC-approved clock hours show that you participated. They are not a license to practice or an endorsement of your work by VMSC. Please describe your training accurately, for example "completed [program name] at the Virginia M. Satir Center." Each offering page states whether NBCC-approved clock hours are available. Virginia M. Satir Center is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP No. 7683).
Outcomes
Results differ from person to person. VMSC does not guarantee any particular outcome.
